Embarking on a weight loss journey, especially one involving bariatric surgery, is a big decision.

At Sydney Bariatric Clinic, we understand that you’re not just looking for a procedure, but a clear path to a healthier future.

Our Patient Pathway is designed to guide you every step of the way, providing comprehensive support and expert care from your very first inquiry to your long-term success.

We’re here to make sure you feel informed, comfortable, and confident throughout your transformation.

Step 1: Your first consultation and understanding your options

Your journey begins with a personal consultation with Dr. Brendan Ryan, who has performed thousands of successful bariatric surgeries.

This is not a rushed appointment. Dr Ryan is there to listen to you, to hear your story, discuss your weight loss goals, and raise any other concerns. You are welcome to bring a partner, friend or family member to the consultation if you would like.

During this visit, Dr. Ryan will:

  • review your medical history and current health

  • discuss the various weight loss surgery options, explaining which might be best suited for you. This could also include revision options if you have regained weight after previous surgery.

  • explain the potential benefits and risks of each procedure

  • answer all your questions, ensuring you have a clear understanding of the path forward

This initial meeting is about empowering you with knowledge and ensuring you choose the next step that is right for you.

Step 2: Comprehensive pre-surgery preparation

If you decide to go ahead with surgery, we move into the preparation phase, where our multidisciplinary team will help set you up for success.

  • Medical Clearances & Tests: Dr Ryan will order a series of tests including bloods, a barium swallow, and any others that relate to your specific health profile. This will identify any pre-existing conditions, like gallstones or hernia, that might need to be addressed.

  • Anethitists Consultations: You’ll meet with our expert dietitians to begin dietary changes, understand pre-operative liquid diets, and learn about the nutritional adjustments needed after surgery.

  • Psychological consult: At Sydney Bariatric Clinic we have two clinical psychologists who both have several years experience working with bariatric surgery and mental health issues. A 50-minute consultation is included in your program your emotional readiness for surgery and help you develop coping strategies for the lifestyle changes ahead. This support is vital for nurturing your mind.

Step 3: Your Surgery Day and Hospital Stay

The day of your surgery is a significant milestone! You’ll be admitted to the hospital, where our caring team will ensure you’re comfortable and prepared.

  • The Procedure: Dr. Ryan will perform your chosen bariatric surgery using advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques, which typically mean smaller incisions, less pain, and a faster recovery.

  • Hospital Care: You’ll usually stay in the hospital for 2-3 days, depending on the procedure. Our nursing staff will monitor your recovery, manage any discomfort, and help you with your initial post-surgery movements and liquid intake.

Step 4: Recovery and Post-Operative Care

Your recovery begins immediately after surgery, and we’re with you every step of the way.

  • Immediate Recovery: You’ll start with a liquid diet, gradually progressing to pureed, soft, and then solid foods under the guidance of our dietitians.

  • Pain Management: We’ll ensure you have appropriate pain relief to make your recovery as comfortable as possible.

  • Early Mobilisation: Gentle walking is encouraged soon after surgery to aid recovery and prevent complications.

Step 5: Long-Term Follow-Up and Ongoing Support

Your journey doesn’t end when you leave the hospital. Long-term follow-up is essential for maintaining your weight loss and overall health.

  • Regular Check-ups: You’ll have scheduled follow-up appointments with Dr. Ryan and our dietitian to monitor your progress, adjust your dietary plan, and address any concerns.

  • Nutritional Guidance: Ongoing support from our dietitians will help you navigate your new eating habits and ensure you’re getting all the necessary nutrients, including lifelong vitamin and mineral supplements.

  • Support System: We encourage participation in support groups or continued psychological sessions if beneficial, as building a strong support network is key to sustainable success.

Our patient pathway is designed to empower you with the tools, knowledge, and support you need to achieve your weight loss goals and embrace a healthier, more fulfilling life.
