Gallstones/Gallbladder Removal

Gallbladder pain is most often from gallstones. Gallstones often form following weight loss and patients can sometimes get sudden attacks of severe upper abdominal pain occurring months to years after weight loss surgery.

These symptoms may include:

  • sudden pain in the upper abdomen, often right-sided and occasionally through to the back. Pain is generally infrequent, but can be intense and severe
  • increase in abdominal pain after eating a fatty meal, or chocolate and dairy
  • jaundice (yellow discolouration of the skin, eyes)
  • fever and pain (if the gallbladder or bile duct becomes infected)

If you have been experiencing these symptoms, you will likely need to have an ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis. Surgery is the main treatment for gallstones. As the gallbladder is not a vital organ, the body can function normally without it. The surgery is performed
laparoscopically (keyhole surgery) and recovery is quick.
